The printing press remains
the machine of choice for high-volume, professional
publishing. However, as printers have improved
in quality and performance, many jobs which
used to be done by professional print shops
are now done by users on local printers; see
desktop publishing.
The world's first computer printer was a 19th-century
mechanically driven apparatus invented by Charles
Babbage for his Difference Engine.
Digital image authentication is an emerging
issue for the providers and producers of high
resolution digital images such as health care
organizations, law enforcement agencies and
insurance companies. There is currently no method
available to analyze a digital image and determine
if it has been altered or not. However, there
are some technologies on the horizon which are
useful in confirming the non-alteration of images
whose original producer is known.
Although there are many available, Adobe Photoshop
is one of the most famous tools for digital
imaging and is used by many professionals. These
programs can be used to create new images and
edit existing ones.
Digital photography, as opposed to film photography,
uses electronic devices to record the image
as binary data. This facilitates storage and
editing of the images on personal computers,
and also the ability to show and delete unsuccessful
images immediately on the camera itself.
Digital cameras now outsell film cameras and
include features not found in film cameras such
as the ability to shoot video and record audio.
Some other devices, such as mobile phones, now
include digital photography features.
An e-book sometimes called an electronic book,
is an electronic (or digital) equivalent of
a conventional printed book. The term has occasionally
been used ambiguously to refer to either an
individual work in a digital format, or a hardware
device used to read books in digital format,
more specifically called an e-book device or
e-book reader. E-books are an emerging and rapidly
changing technology, that can branch to include
other formats, such as a online magazines, such
as the Grantville Gazette, published by Baen's
Books, or digital books designed to be listened
to as audio books.
